Track History and Fun Facts: Prairie Meadows has been a vital part of the central Iowa community since it began operations in 1989. Prairie Meadows conducted its first race card on March 1, 1989. The track annually runs three meets; the first is exclusively for Thoroughbreds, the second is for Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses followed in October by the 17-day Standardbred harness meet . In addition to its pari-mutuel operations, Prairie Meadows has 1,500 casino slot machines and 33 table games, the latter added in December 2004; casino and simulcast facilities are open year-round. From 1994-2004, residents of Altoona witnessed a massive renovation to Prairie Meadows, including the building of a $26-million casino expansion project and the addition of table games.
