Track History and Fun Facts: Pompano was opened on July 15, 1965, and more than 12,000 bettors and reporters came to see the newest addition to Florida's already sterling lineup of racetracks, including Liberty Bell, to the south and Meadows to the west. To construct and operate Pompano in 1960, the late James and Anna Durkin spent $7 million. Pompano Park first opened in 1964 under Frederick Van Lennep's management, a horse lover with a dream to build the "Taj Mahal" of harness racing. During the past 40 years the track has played host to many world champion horses and race events, including the prestigious Breeder Crown Championships.

Pompano has enjoyed profitable seasons for 20 years. In 1996, Penn National Gaming Inc. bought the track and all of its facilities for $47 million from the late Joseph Banks. A new era in the history of Mohegan Sun at Pompano began in late January 2005 when Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority purchased the racetrack and its off-track wagering facilities from Penn National Gaming.
