Track History and Fun Facts: Scenic Monticello Raceway began operations on its lightning-fast half-mile track June 27, 1958. Located just 90 miles from downtown New York City, it is located in the heart of the Sullivan County Catskils vacationland. Many of the greatest names in the sport began their careers at Monticello Raceway. Throughout the years, Monticello has been known for exciting harness racing as well as some equally exciting promotions. Probably the biggest to date, its Rock'n'Racing night has combined some of the biggest musicians of the day, such as Ike and Tina Turner, with harness racing. As well, media attention grabbers like elephant races and man vs. horse races have been witnessed at Monticello. Now with the installation of video gaming machines at Monticello, the amenities of a Vegas atmosphere are now in conjunction with exciting harness racing all year round.
