Track History and Fun Facts: It's known as The Mile. Joe Gottstein wanted to put Washington Thoroughbred horse racing on the map. June of 1935, Gottstein made the announcement that Longacres would feature the $10,000 Longacres Mile. The mile was not considered the classic distance. That's what appealed to Gottstein so much. He knew it took a unique horse to excel at the mile distance.

The Mile was inaugurated with a then unheard of $10,000-added purse and for more than four decades was the richest stakes event in the country at the mile distance. To date, it remains the richest stakes race west of Chicago and north of the Bay Area.
