Gulfstream Park – Fountain of Youth

Union Rags takes on a Pletcher Pair

The Sunday feature race not only at Gulfstream Park, but across the country is the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes for three-year-olds. The race drew a field of six with the focus on Union Rags and two colts trained by Todd Pletcher.

Union Rags gets top billing off his two-year-old season, which ended with a game second in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs. That was the only time he suffered defeat after starting his career a perfect three-for-three.

The biggest win last year for Union Rags came in the Grade 1 Champagne at Belmont Park. That day he was sent off as the 6-5 favorite and looked every bit of that. The Dixie Union-colt waited and waited then drew off to win by over five when asked. Off that effort he was the post-time favorite for the Juvenile, but could not overcome an outside post and an insanely wide trip.

Union Rags is the current number one on the BetAmerica Top 15, but will be tested in the Fountain of Youth. The goal for the connections is the first Saturday in May and this is just the first step. Not to mention the fact there are two good colts that have the resumes to upset.

Algorithms has started his racing career off with three straight victories by a total of over 11-lengths. He broke his maiden in June by just over five then was off until mid-December. No rust was evident when winning an allowance by a length then improved leaps and bounds when he won the Grade 3 Holy Bull by five. Behind him in second was Hansen, who defeated Union Rags last year.

In an interesting side bar Algorithms is where jockey Javier Castellano winds up in the Fountain of Youth on Algorithms. He had previously ridden Union Rags for his last three races and was the rider for Discreet Dancer for his two races.

Discreet Dancer, the “other” Todd Pletcher, began his career in late December with an easy win in a Florida-bred maiden special weight race then came right back to win going away in an allowance race. The Fountain of Youth will be his first start around two turns, but he could be on the lead all by himself and picks up John Velazquez in the irons.

The other entrants in the field are Neck ‘n Neck, Fort Loudon, Casual Trick, News Pending and Csaba. Bettors must decide whether to box the top three or try to hit a good price with one of these.

Of the five look to Casual Trick and News Pending to have the best shot at the upset. Casual Trick was sent off as the favorite in an allowance race with El Padrino and Take Charge Indy, but a stumbled start and a good track may have been his undoing. The winner of that race, El Padrino, runs at Fair Grounds on Saturday so a good result by him will flatter the chances of Casual Trick. The best race for Casual Trick in his four-race career was at the same distance as the Fountain of Youth over the track.

News Pending may be a better horse on the turf, but his nose defeat on the main track at Belmont in a maiden race suggests the Harlan’s Holiday-colt could be talented no matter the surface. He picks up Kent Desormeaux in the irons for the first time.

Will Union Rags remain at the head of the class or will someone step up? Stay tuned, this is when the Derby Trail gets interesting.

Post time for the Fountain of Youth on Sunday is 5:13 ET.

Gulfstream Park – The Very One

Turf Fillies and Mares

The Fountain of Youth is on Sunday, but the Saturday card at Gulfstream Park is equally as good. There are three graded stakes races including the return of Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic winner Royal Delta in the Sabin and Grace Hall, second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, in the Davona Dale, but the best of the three races for the bettors may be Grade 3 The Very One.

The eleven-furlong turf race drew a full field of 13 and also features a horse coming off a run in the Breeders’ Cup.

Perfect Shirl ran the race of her career when winning the Filly and Mare Turf last November, which was her first win since July 2010. Riding an eight-race losing streak Perfect Shirl was sent off at odds of nearly 28-1, but relished the good Churchill turf course.

Even with the win Perfect Shirl may not be one of the betting choices when the gates open on Saturday. The Woodbine horses were doing very well over the two-day Breeders’ Cup event and her trainer, Roger Attfield, has started the Gulfstream meet winless in sixteen starts.

After Perfect Shirl there are only two other mares coming off of wins going into The Very One.

Casablanca Smile has two wins, three seconds and a third in her six U.S. starts after leaving her home country of Chile, where she was a two-time Grade 1 winner. The six-year-old mare looks to be the major pace player in the race. Her two wins in the States have been wire-to-wire including the Grade 3 La Prevoyante Handicap at Calder. One interesting thing to note is that she ran in the same race in the same calendar year.

Shimmering Moment is also coming in off a victory having just put her next in front at the wire in an allowance race at Gulfstream in early January. That race was also at eleven furlongs and she should not be far behind in the early stages. The question for her is if she is up to this class level.

One mare who is no stranger to the graded stakes ranks is Keertana, a six-year-old trained by Tom Proctor. By Johar, Keertana is coming off a third place finish to Zagora in the Grade 3 Endeavour at Tampa Bay Downs and won this race last year. In three career starts at the distance she has two wins and a third, which came in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf in 2010.

One interesting mare is the Brazilian-bred Here to Win. After starting her career in South Africa, then a campaign in Dubai, Here to Win came to the U.S. with high expectations. She did not live up to those in her first race, but moved up greatly in her last. She will be motoring down the lane late under jockey Joe Bravo.

Completing the field are Hasay, the Graham Motion trained and Team Valor-owned mare, as well as Woodford Belle, Clarinet, Good Karma, Middle Club, Font, Aquitaine and Full Moon Party.

Post time for The Very One is 4:45 ET and is the second leg of the late pick-4, which starts in race nine at 4:17.

Santa Anita – San Carlos Stakes

Amazombie Meets The Factor

Saturday’s feature race at The Great Race Place is the $200,000 Grade 2 San Marcos Stakes for four-year-olds and upward going seven furlongs on the main track. The only drew six, but it’s a deep field of sprinters.

The majority of the betting action is going to focus on two of the runners, Amazombie and The Factor.

Amazombie is making his 2012 debut after scratching out of the Palos Verdes after concerns over the track condition. The gelding had a banner year in 2011 winning five races including the Grade 1 Ancient Title at Santa Anita and the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

Amazombie has been a crack sprinter at six furlongs, but the San Carlos is at seven, a distance that Amazombie has only made one start at. In the Grade 1 Triple Bend at Hollywood Park, Amazombie finished third, beaten over five-lengths. He did; however, win the state-bred Tiznow Stakes at seven and one-half furlongs at Hollywood Park.

One horse that won’t have any questions about the distance is The Factor for trainer Bob Baffert. Baffert is on a stakes roll having won both runnings of the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Monday. The Factor is hoping to continue that hot hand on Saturday.

Off a disappointing effort in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, The Factor came back and sizzled through seven furlongs en route to winning the Grade 1 Malibu at Santa Anita in late December. The War Front-colt is the speed of the speed once again; come and get him.

Canonize drew the rail, does have some early speed and could be the one to put pressure on the leader early. The six-year-old gelding will need to improve as he is winless in four career graded stakes starts.

Mensa Heat looks to be better against state-breds and may be a better horse on a synthetic surface.

Rothko had an interesting trip in the Malibu in his last start and was only beat just under three lengths by The Factor. He may be sitting the trip if, and that’s a big if, The Factor weakens.

Amazombie will be doing his best running late and will the last entrant, Sway Away. Off since June 2011, Sway Away’s best two career efforts have been at seven furlongs. He was second to The Factor by just under a length in the San Vicente last February and won an allowance race at the distance at Hollywood Park in his last race. The major concern with him is that there is no one to really push The Factor and that is bad news for the field.

Scheduled as race seven on the nine-race card, post time is 6:36 ET.

Fair Grounds – Mineshaft Handicap

Nine Older Horses Down in the Bayou

All eyes at the Fair Grounds will be on the Risen Star Stakes on Saturday, but the supporting card is just as good. There are six total stakes races with four of them graded. One of them, the Grade 3 Mineshaft Handicap, kicks off the 50-cent pick-4, which includes the Colonel Power on the turf and the Risen Star.

Of the nine runners there are four shipper and five locally-based horses, let’s check out the locals.

Leading the Fair Grounds charge is Thiskyhasnolimit, who is coming off a wire-to-wire victory in the Louisiana Handicap at Fair Grounds in January. The win in the Louisiana was his first since winning the Texas Mile at Lone Star Park in April of last year.

The concern for Thiskyhasnolimit is that the five-year-old has yet to put back-to-back winning efforts together in this 19-race career.

Behind him in the Louisiana were Fast Alex and Alma d’Oro, who are back again on Saturday to reverse that finish. Both chased the winner around the track with Fast Alex finishing the better of the pair. Fast Alex is preferred in this race as there appears to be plenty of speed to set the race up nicely for him.

Nates Mineshaft would be the hunch play of the day being sired by Mineshaft, but the five-year-old needs a huge improvement to even hit the board.

Mister Mardi Gras is the other locally-based horse, but he has not started since a fourth place finish in the Grade 1 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs in late November. He will likely be last in the early stages as he has no early speed. Of course being a stretch-runner may not be such a bad thing.

Tres Borrachos, Cool Blue Red Hot, Pants On Fire and Gladding are the shippers and they are going to assure a fast pace.

Tres Borrachos is probably better coming off-the-pace, but he was on the lead two back in the Grade 3 Native Diver at Hollywood Park and sat third in the Grade 3 San Pasqual at Santa Anita in his last. His new jockey, Edgar Prado, is not known for pushing early so expect a return to a stalk-and-pounce trip.

Cool Blue Red Hot ships over from Gulfstream Park after a third place finish to Jackson Bend and Sangaree in the Grade 3 Hal’s Hope. Of this three lifetime wins two have been at Belmont Park, but all three of his wins have come at or about the distance of the Mineshaft.

Pants On Fire has not run since a disappointing fifth in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park last July. Proir to that he won the Grade 3 Pegasus at Monmouth Park and the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds. Sandwiched between those two was a ninth place finish in the Kentucky Derby. Pants On Fire has a win and a second in three starts over the Fair Grounds main track, but may need a start off the long layoff.

Gladding is the most likely horse to put pressure on Thiskyhasnolimit early and may even out-sprint him to the first turn. In 2011, Gladding won the Grade 2 San Antonio over nine-furlongs at Santa Anita and was second to Thiskyhasnolimit in the Texas Mile at Lone Star Park. Gladding was sent off as the favorite in his last, the Ack Ack Handicap at Churchill Downs, but could only muster a fourth place finish. Ahead of him that day were Mister Mardi Gras and Alma d’Oro.

Post time for the Mineshaft is 4:55 ET with the Colonel Power to follow and the Risen Star featuring Mr. Bowling and El Padrino off at 5:55.

Golden Gate Fields – El Camino Real Derby

Three-Year-Olds in the Bay

The major three-year-old prep race on Saturday is the Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields. A field of ten will line up for the nine-furlong race with Russian Greek installed as the 5-2 morning line favorite.

Russian Greek is the horse-for-course at Golden Gate with two wins in three starts over the track. His biggest and best win came in the $100,000 California Derby, which is the local prep for the El Camino Real.

In the Cal Derby Russian Greek was unhurried early, but flew in a hurry late to catch Cahill Chrome and win going away. Russian Greek, by Giant’s Causeway, should love the additional half furlong and is the horse to beat.

In addition to Russian Greek and Cahill Chrome there are two other horses that come out of the Cal Derby. Senor Rain was third and Unveiled Heat was fifth. Senor Rain is a salty 12-1 on the morning line for the race Saturday after being 4-1 in the Cal Derby. He is likely to improve in his second start off the layoff and may set the early pace. Unveiled Heat is a long shot again and will need to step up. His best two races were on the turf and is winless in five career starts over the Tapeta at Golden Gate.

The best of the new shooters are Daddy Nose Best, Lucky Chappy and Handsome Mike, who all might be better on the turf.

Daddy Nose Best drew the rail for the El Camino Real and will be making his first start on a synthetic surface. So far in his eight race career he has run six times on the turf and twice on the dirt with both his wins coming over the grass. Jockey Julien Leparoux will need a hot pace up front if his mount is going to be effective.

Lucky Chappy is another turf closer and runs for the same connections who won the Kentucky Derby last year with Animal Kingdom. The High Chaparral-colt is winless in three starts in the U.S. after going two-for-three in Italy.

Handsome Mike has something that the above two don’t have and that’s a start over synthetics; however, they weren’t exactly top efforts. In his debut he was fourth, beaten seven, at Del Mar then in the Grade 1 Cash Call Futurity at Hollywood Park he was seventh, beaten just under three lengths. He broke his maiden on the downhill turf course at Santa Anita and was second in the Grade 3 Generous over the Hollywood Park turf.

Handsome Mike appears to be one of the pace players on Saturday as does Senor Rain, Cahill Chrome, Rockinarz Recruit, All Squared Away and Lady of Fifty. Rockinarz Recruit and All Squared Away will be long shots when the gates open, but Lady of Fifty is interesting from post ten.

By the name you can figure out that Lady of Fifty is a filly taking on the boys. She is four-for-five in her career with three straight including the $100,000 California Oaks over the surface last month. Even though the two races came a week a part the speed figure earned by Lady of Fifty was higher than her male counterpart Russian Greek earned in the California Derby. Both Russian Greek and Lady of Fifty are trained by Jerry Hollendorfer with Aaron Gryder riding the Greek and Russell Baze taking the call on Lady of Fifty. You can never count out Hollendorfer and Baze in Northern California.

Scheduled as race eight on Saturday the El Camino Real Derby goes to post at 7:15 ET.

Gulfstream Park – Sprint Championship

Force Freeze Drops to Score

The feature race on Saturday at Gulfstream Park is the 36th running of the Grade 2 Sprint Championship for older horses. The seven-furlong sprint drew a field of eight led by Force Freeze.

Force Freeze comes into the Sprint Championship off an excellent second to Amazombie in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs. Under jockey John Velazquez, Force Freeze stalked the pace for the first quarter mile, but soon found himself on the lead. He put away all his pace rivals, but was just collared at the wire by the late-running closer.

Prior to the Breeders’ Cup, Force Freeze was second in the Grade 1 Vosburgh Invitational over a muddy, sealed track at Belmont Park and won a stakes race at Monmouth Park, which was his first start in the U.S. since May 2008 after a campaign in Dubai.

The biggest concern for the backers of Force Freeze is the distance. The seven-year-old gelding has never been further than six furlongs in his career. He runs like he can get the extra furlong, but may be looking for the wire hoping to hold off the closers.

On speed figures Force Freeze stands out. His last three speed figures have been all over 100 with a 106 top in his last. In comparison only two other horses, Bold Warrior and Capt. Candyman Can, have run speed figures in the 100’s in their career.

Bold Warrior topped the 100-mark in his last race, a second place finish in a $58,000 stakes race at Belmont Park last October. That race was at one mile around one turn and he has a win and a second in two career starts at seven furlongs.

Capt. Candyman Can is the seven-furlong specialist with five wins in six starts at the distance. The six-year-old gelding is a Grade 1 winner at seven furlongs after taking the King’s Bishop via disqualification at Saratoga in 2009. He is a closer and thus is at the mercy of the pace, which may not be all that strong.

Decisive Moment has some front-running races, but all of those have been at longer distances. He set a very slow pace in his last race, the Hal’s Hope, and may not be the one to take up the early running on Saturday. That leaves Simba’s Story for trainer Todd Pletcher and his go-to rider John Velazquez.

Simba’s Story steps way up after a win in an allowance race, but if any trainer can get the job done it’s Pletcher. Velazquez should know Force Freeze well after riding him in the Breeders’ Cup and being drawn inside that rival, Velazquez could take up the early running. It may not be enough to hold off the favorite, but he could hold on for the minor awards.

Troilus is an interesting runner from the Marty Wolfson barn. The Speightstown-colt has won his last three races including his last two around one mile over the track. He began his career with three straight starts at seven furlongs, but was only able to manage a second and a third. Since his last race Troilus has worked a hole in the wind with back-to-back bullet works. He is the upsetter and one to watch going forward.

Rounding out the field are the Louisiana-bred Amanecer de Oro and the claimer Dixie Slam.

Post time for race, which goes as race ten on the 11-race card, is 4:45 ET.

Santa Anita – Santa Maria Stakes

Ellafitz Looks for Three Straight

Ellafitz is a front-runner nightmare for her rivals and once again she gets a chance to display her speed when she takes on six other fillies and mares on Saturday in the Grade 2 Santa Maria Stakes at Santa Anita.

Ellafitz as well as Spirit Seeker, Kayce Ace and Vision in Gold are all coming out of the $83,000 Paseana Handicap, which was run at the same course and distance as the Santa Maria, in mid-January. Spirit Seeker was third with Kayce Ace fourth and Vision in Gold sixth.

Vision in Gold actually started favored in the Paseana even though she was coming into the race off a ten-month layoff. What bettors were focusing on had to be the third in the Grade 1 Santa Margarita at Santa Anita and a win in last year’s Santa Maria.

The one interesting thing about Vision in Gold for the Paseana was that she showed up in front wraps, which is never a great thing to see for the first time in her career coming off a long layoff. If the wraps come off on Saturday then expect a big effort from the Medaglia d’Oro filly.

Kayce Ace defeated Ellafitz when they met at Hollywood Park last June, but could not close the gap in the Paseana. She will need to be closer to the pace in the Santa Maria and hope that one of the other rivals goes with Ellafitz early.

Spirit Seeker was projected to be closer to the pace in the Paseana, but for some reason was taken back. She pulled early and had nothing late, which prompted trainer Doug O’Neill to make a jockey switch back to Rafael Bejarano. Joe Talamo, the jockey on Spirit Seeker in the last, winds up with Kayce Ace. With the jock change expect Spirit Seeker to be pushing Ellafitz from the start.

Miss Mittagong and Love Theway Youare are coming off of graded stakes races, but were easily handled by Ellafitz in the Grade 2 Bayakoa Handicap at Hollywood Park in early December. Miss Mittagong is making her first start on the conventional dirt and is bred to handle it being by Breeders’ Cup Classic and Dubai World Cup winner Pleasantly Perfect.

The final filly in the race is Great Hot, who is coming into the race off a second place finish in the Grade 2 La Canada last month. In the La Canada Great Hot was closer to the pace than in the past, but could not out run the winner Include Me Out in the late stages. Include Me Out is trained by Ron Ellis so the connections are hoping to out duel his Vision in Gold on Saturday.

Post time for the Santa Maria is 7:07 ET.

Laurel Park – Barbara Fritchie Handicap

Grade 2 Fillies and Mares

The “other” Graded stakes race on Saturday is the Grade 2 Barbara Fritchie Handicap for fillies and mares going seven furlongs on the main track at Laurel Park. A field of nine will go postward and contention runs deep.

The probable morning line favorite is the Michael Hushion-trained Nicole H, who is coming into the race with back-to-back scores over the inner dirt at Aqueduct. On New Year’s Day Nicole H won by a neck, despite traffic, in the Interborough then won with ease in the Correction in her last start. The one caveat about Nicole H is that she is five-for-five at the Big A and only two-for-thirteen elsewhere.

C C’s Pal is also coming off back-to-back score at Aqueduct winning the Garland Of Roses at six furlongs then stretching out to win the nine furlong Ladies Handicap on New Year’s day. Since moving to the Rick Dutrow barn, C C’s Pal is three-for-four with her only loss coming to Lovely Lil, who is also entered in the Fritchie.

In her last six starts Lovely Lil has been in-the-money in all six including three wins highlighted by a win in the Grade 2 Go For Wand over the main track at Aqueduct in November. Seven furlongs isn’t the best distance for Lovely Lil as evident by her zero-for-three record. A stablemate of Nicole H, Lovely Lil is likely to be part of the early pace on Saturday.

The other pace player is Red’s Round Table, who loves the Laurel Park course. In five career starts over the track she has four wins and a second. She comes off a smashing allowance win in late January at Laurel and won the Wide Country Stakes over the course and distance last year.

Silver Heart is somewhat of a distance specialist having run twelve of her 29 career starts at seven furlongs. In those twelve she only has three wins, two seconds and two thirds with most coming in West Virginia-bred races. She will get a good stalking trip from the outside and could round out the tri or superfecta.

Aquitania, three-for-three at Laurel, Magical Feeling, four wins in her last five starts, are the next contenders in line with Terra Rolla and Lily Quatorze the long shots in the group.

Post time for the Barbara Fritchie 3:55 ET.
