Congratulations to Jeff B. and his guest Diann on winning a trip to the 137th Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby this past weekend at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Jeff was BetAmerica.com’s lucky winner in our wager contest! Jeff and Diann enjoyed two glorious days at Churchill’s Down watching the most anticipated event of the year!
On Friday the forecast was thundershowers and a low of 55 but as you can see from these photo the day couldn’t have been more perfect. Enjoying mint juleps and watching the races made for an exciting day and built up even more excitement for the Derby.
Saturday started off with a few clouds and light rain showers but the clouds disappeared and Jeff and Diann spent the afternoon in sunlight and warm breezes while wagering on the Derby, drinking mint julep’s and seeing what makes the Kentucky Derby so well known: the hats! From as far as the eye could see their were hats of all different shapes and sizes!

I just wanted to add that the whole community up here has been quite amazing as it reacts to this crisis. The Red River has risen to 40 feet above normal levels. Flood level is at 18 feet! So, literally thousands of volunteers have been helping make sandbags and build dikes around the city to protect it from the rising waters of the Red River. There is also a new earthen dam which was built over the last week or so along the eastern edge of Downtown right on Second Avenue which protects the core business district. Our office is only about 200 feet from this dike, which is at 43 feet. The National Weather Service the waters may crest as high as 43 feet, but we hoping it doesn’t get there!
But hats off to the thousands of volunteers who have made millions of sandbags to protect against the flood waters.
